Wyoming is one of a handful of states that already has an established industrial use for CO2. Injecting CO2 into old oil wells to enhance oil production (CO2-EOR), and ultimately to sequester the CO2 left in the ground afterward, is already being implemented in Wyoming.
EORI’s Acting Director, Lon Whitman, states in an interview “People need financial support through tax credits or federal dollars for storing [CO2] to make these projects economic.” Currently, CO2-EOR is the only commercial sequestration industry that provides enough built-in profit to help offset the cost of upgrading the infrastructure needed to capture, transport, and store this greenhouse gas.

“Wyoming is in a position to remain a major player on the national oil and gas stage for years to come.”
The WSGS says that “Despite a challenging year, there are reasons to be optimistic about Wyoming’s oil and gas industries. In addition to Wyoming’s extensive oil and gas reserves, prices are showing signs of recovering, preliminary data for the latter half of 2020 suggests production has stabilized at about 85 percent of pre-pandemic levels, and drill rigs have once again started operating in the state.”
The 2020 summary report is available as a free download from the WSGS website.

An updated survey finds resiliency in CO2-EOR opportunities for Wyoming oil fields with plenty of room for industry growth.
In a recent interview, the Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute’s Acting Director, Lon Whitman, highlights Wyoming’s success with CO2-EOR technologies that help reduce CO2 atmospheric emissions while effectively increasing oil production for the state. According to Whitman, CO2-EOR is highly effective, but building the infrastructure to support it is expensive.
